A goal goes in. Your phone buzzes with the news. And then, a little later, you watch the same goal on your TV. If that sounds familiar, you have met stream delay — sometimes called latency — and it is one of the most common surprises for people moving from cable or satellite to IPTV.
The delay is not a fault in your device. It is a normal side effect of how live video is delivered over the internet. Here is where it comes from and what you can realistically do about it.
How big is the delay?
It varies. Internet streams of live channels are often somewhere from several seconds to around a minute behind a traditional broadcast, depending on how the stream is produced and how your player handles it. Two people watching the same channel on different devices can even be out of step with each other.
The precise number matters less than understanding that some delay is built in.
Where the delay comes from
A live stream passes through several stages before it reaches your screen, and each one adds time.
1. Receiving and encoding
The channel’s original signal has to be captured and compressed into a streaming format. Good compression needs to look at a short stretch of video at a time, so encoding is never instant.
2. Packaging into segments
Many streaming formats, such as HLS, split video into small chunks, each a few seconds long. A chunk cannot be sent until it is complete, so the stream is always at least one chunk behind the live moment — and players usually wait for more than one.
3. Delivery across the internet
The segments travel through servers and networks to reach you. Normally this adds relatively little, but congestion can add more.
4. The player’s buffer
This is the part closest to you and the one you have some control over. Your player deliberately holds a few seconds of video before it starts playing, so that small dips in your connection do not interrupt the picture. A bigger buffer means fewer interruptions and more delay.
5. Buffering events
Every time the picture pauses to buffer and then carries on, you fall further behind. After a few interruptions, you can be noticeably further back than when you started — even though the stream itself has not changed.
Why cable and satellite feel “live”
Traditional broadcast TV also has a small delay, but its signal travels through a dedicated system straight into your TV or receiver, without being broken into chunks and buffered in the same way. How to reduce stream delay
You cannot remove delay completely, but you can stop it growing and trim some of it.
Restart the channel after buffering
If your stream buffered earlier, you may be well behind the live point. Switching away and back to the channel, or using a “jump to live” option if your player has one, brings you back to the current edge of the stream.
Keep your connection stable

Look at the player’s buffer setting
Some players let you choose a buffer size. A smaller buffer reduces delay slightly but makes interruptions more likely on a weak connection. If your connection is excellent, a smaller buffer can work well; if it is not, leave it at the default. Our player settings guide covers this and other options.
Avoid pausing live channels
Pausing a live channel and then resuming puts you behind by however long you paused. That is useful when you need it, but remember to jump back to live afterwards.
Choose the same stream on every TV
In a home with several screens, using the same channel version and player on each keeps them closer together, which helps when the kitchen and living room are both watching a match. Check that your plan covers every screen you use at once — our subscription plans are available for 1 or 2 devices.
Avoiding spoilers during live events
For most programmes, a delay does not matter. For live sport and results shows, it can. A few habits help:
- Silence score and news notifications on your phone during the match.
- Stay off social media until the final whistle, or mute keywords if your apps support it.
- Watch with people on the same stream rather than texting friends watching on broadcast TV.
- Be aware of radio and neighbours. Live radio and broadcast TV next door will usually be ahead of you.
When delay points to a problem

Live IPTV runs behind traditional broadcasts because video has to be encoded, packaged into segments, delivered and buffered before you see it. You cannot eliminate that delay, but you can stop it growing by keeping playback free of buffering and restarting the channel when you fall behind.
