How cable TV works

Traditional cable TV sends channels through a dedicated network of coaxial and fibre cables owned by the cable operator. The signal arrives at your home through a wall socket and is decoded by a set-top box supplied by the operator, usually one per TV.

Because the operator controls the whole network and reserves capacity for TV, cable is designed to deliver a consistent picture regardless of what else is happening on your internet connection.

Where cable still has the edge

It is worth being honest about cable’s strengths:

  • Consistency. Because TV has its own capacity on the operator’s network, a busy home internet connection rarely affects the picture.
  • Simplicity. One box, one remote, and very little to configure.
  • No data use. Watching cable does not count towards a capped broadband allowance.
  • Quick channel changes. Traditional tuning is often faster than starting a new internet stream.

If your broadband is slow or unreliable, or you have a strict data cap, cable may still be the more practical option.

With IPTV, part of the delivery chain is inside your home. The same service can be flawless on one setup and frustrating on another. The biggest influences are:

  • Broadband speed and stability, especially in the evening.
  • Wi-Fi coverage where your TV is. A wired connection is best for the main TV.
  • Device performance. Older or budget devices can struggle with 4K and large programme guides.
