If 4K is about how many pixels a picture has, HDR is about what those pixels can show. High dynamic range lets bright things be genuinely bright — sunlight on water, stadium floodlights, a lit match in a dark room — while keeping detail in the shadows and producing richer, more realistic colour.
It can also be the reason a perfectly good film suddenly looks dark, grey or oddly flat. This guide explains the HDR formats you will see in streaming, what your equipment needs to support, and how to fix the most common HDR picture problems.
What HDR changes
Standard video, known as SDR (standard dynamic range), was designed around the limits of older TVs. HDR widens three things:
- Brightness range — brighter highlights with detail preserved, instead of clipping to white.
- Shadow detail — darker areas keep texture rather than turning to flat black.
- Colour — a wider range of colours, with smoother gradations between them.
Because HDR changes contrast and colour rather than fine detail, it is visible from any seating distance. That is why many people find a good HDR picture more striking than the jump from Full HD to 4K, a trade-off we cover in 4K vs Full HD for streaming.
The HDR formats
HDR comes in several formats. Your content, streaming device and TV all need to support the same one — or a compatible fallback — for HDR to display properly.
HDR10
The most widely supported HDR format and the baseline for HDR TVs. HDR10 uses static metadata: one set of brightness information for the whole film or programme.
HDR10+
Builds on HDR10 with dynamic metadata, which lets brightness information change scene by scene. That helps TVs with limited brightness handle very different scenes more accurately. Support is common on some TV brands, such as Samsung, but not universal.
Dolby Vision
Also uses dynamic metadata, adjusted scene by scene or even frame by frame. It requires licensed support in the TV and the playback device. Many LG, Sony and other TVs support it; Samsung TVs generally do not, favouring HDR10+ instead.
HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)
Designed for broadcast and live TV. HLG can be shown on SDR TVs as a normal picture and on HLG-capable TVs as HDR, without separate versions of the stream. That makes it well suited to live events.

What you need for HDR streaming
HDR only works when every part of the chain supports it:
- HDR content — the channel or title must actually be produced in HDR.
- A player app that passes HDR through — some IPTV players handle HDR better than others.
- A streaming device that supports the format — most current 4K streaming sticks and boxes support HDR10 and HLG; support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision varies by model.
- An HDMI connection that carries it — a 4K HDR-capable HDMI port with HDCP 2.2, a high-speed cable and, on many TVs, the enhanced HDMI format setting switched on for that input.
- An HDR TV — ideally one bright enough to make HDR highlights meaningful.
If any link falls back to SDR, you see an SDR picture.
TV brightness: why HDR looks different on every TV
HDR content is often mastered with highlights far brighter than many TVs can display. Every TV has to tone map — squeeze those highlights into the brightness it can actually produce.
- Bright, high-end TVs show HDR close to how it was intended.
- Budget HDR TVs have to compress more, which can make HDR look dim or flat.
This is not a fault in the stream. It is why the same HDR film can look spectacular on one TV and disappointing on another.
Fixing common HDR problems
The picture looks washed out or grey
The most common cause is HDR being forced on for SDR content. Many streaming devices offer a setting that outputs HDR all the time. SDR video then gets converted, and colours look pale.
Fix: set your device to switch dynamic range automatically — often called match dynamic range, match content or adaptive — so it only outputs HDR when the content is HDR.
HDR is not activating at all
Fix:
- Confirm the content is HDR in the player’s stream information.
- Check the device supports that HDR format.
- Turn on the TV’s enhanced HDMI format for that input.
- Try a different HDMI port or a certified high-speed cable.
Everything looks too dark
Fix: use the TV’s HDR Movie, Cinema or Filmmaker mode, turn off energy-saving and ambient light sensors that dim the screen, and watch in a darker room if you can. Our guide to TV picture settings for streaming covers this in more detail.
Colours look too strong
Fix: avoid Vivid or Dynamic modes with HDR. They exaggerate saturation that HDR already provides.
The screen flashes black when content starts
This is normal. The TV is switching between SDR and HDR modes. It is a small price for correct colours.
Is HDR worth caring about?
If you have a reasonably bright 4K HDR TV and watch films, documentaries or major sport, yes — it is often the most visible improvement you can get. If your TV has limited brightness, HDR can still help with colour and shadow detail, but set expectations accordingly.
