Most TVs leave the factory set up to grab attention in a bright shop: glowing colours, heavy sharpening and motion processing that makes everything look hyper-smooth. At home, those same settings can make a clean 4K stream look artificial and a Full HD channel look noisy.
You do not need calibration equipment to fix this. A handful of settings, changed in the right order, get you most of the way to a natural, detailed picture. Names vary by brand, so this guide describes what each setting does and lists common names where they help.
Before you start
- Change settings on the input you actually use. Many TVs store picture settings per input, so a streaming stick on an HDMI port can have different settings from the TV’s own apps.
- Use content you know well. A familiar film or a live channel you watch every day makes it easier to judge changes.
- Adjust in your normal lighting. The best settings for a sunny afternoon are not the best for evening viewing.
1. Picture mode: the setting that matters most
Picture modes are preset groups of settings. Choosing the right one fixes many problems at once.

Start with Filmmaker Mode, Movie or Cinema. If the picture looks too warm or dim at first, give your eyes a few minutes to adjust before changing anything — natural colour often looks “yellow” after months of Vivid mode.
2. Brightness, backlight and contrast
These three names confuse almost everyone, because they do different things than you might expect:
- Backlight / OLED light / panel brightness — how much light the screen produces. Raise it in a bright room, lower it at night.
- Brightness — usually the black level: how dark the darkest parts of the picture are. Setting it too high makes blacks look grey; too low hides shadow detail.
- Contrast — usually the white level: how bright the brightest parts are. Too high can wipe out detail in bright areas.
Adjust backlight for your room first. Then only touch brightness and contrast if shadows or highlights look wrong.
3. Sharpness: less is more
Sharpness does not add detail. It adds contrast around edges, which creates visible outlines and halos and exaggerates compression noise in streams.
Reduce sharpness until you can no longer see bright or dark outlines around people and text. On many modern TVs that means zero or close to it. With genuine 4K content, the natural detail is already there.
4. Motion smoothing: films vs sport
Motion smoothing — also called motion interpolation — creates in-between frames to make movement look smoother. Common names include Auto Motion Plus or Picture Clarity (Samsung), TruMotion (LG), Motionflow (Sony) and MEMC on many other brands.
- Films and drama: turn it off. It creates the “soap opera effect” and can add artefacts around moving objects.
- Live sport: a low setting can reduce blur during fast pans. Avoid the highest settings, which cause visible glitches around the ball and players.
If your TV has separate controls for judder reduction and blur reduction, keep judder reduction low for films and experiment with blur reduction for sport.
5. Noise reduction: depends on the channel
Noise reduction smooths out grain and compression noise.
- Good 4K and Full HD streams: turn it off or low, because it can smear fine texture.
- SD channels and heavily compressed streams: a low setting can make the picture cleaner.

6. Colour temperature and colour
- Colour temperature / white balance: choose Warm (sometimes Warm 1 or Warm 2). Cool settings make whites look blue.
- Colour / saturation: leave at the picture mode’s default unless skin tones look obviously wrong.
- Colour space: use Auto so the TV follows the content, rather than stretching colours on everything.
7. HDMI settings for streaming devices
If you use a Firestick, Android TV box or other external device, two HDMI settings matter:
- Enhanced HDMI format — without it, some TVs limit what an HDMI port accepts, which can block 4K HDR. Common names include Input Signal Plus (Samsung) and HDMI Ultra HD Deep Colour (LG).
- HDMI black level — should match the device’s output. A mismatch makes blacks look crushed (too dark) or washed out (grey). Auto usually works; if not, set both the device and TV to the same range.
8. Settings to switch off
Several features can quietly hurt picture quality:
- Energy saving / eco modes that dim the screen.
- Ambient light sensors, if the brightness keeps changing distractingly.
- Dynamic contrast or contrast enhancer, which pumps brightness up and down.
- Game mode, unless you are gaming — it disables processing that helps video.
9. HDR content
When HDR content plays, most TVs switch to separate HDR picture modes with their own settings. Choose the HDR Movie, Cinema or Filmmaker mode, keep backlight high, and avoid Vivid. If HDR looks dim or washed out, our HDR explainer covers the usual causes.

Settings are only half the picture
