“I’ve got fast broadband, so it can’t be my connection.” It is one of the most common assumptions in IPTV troubleshooting — and one of the most often wrong. The number on your broadband contract, or a quick speed test on your phone beside the router, tells you very little about what reaches your TV at nine o’clock on a busy evening.
This guide shows you how to test in a way that actually reflects IPTV performance, and how to make sense of the results.
What a speed test measures
Most speed tests report some combination of:

A connection with a big download number but high jitter or packet loss can still play live channels badly. That is why download speed alone is not enough.
Step 1: Test in the right place
Test on the device you watch on, or as close to it as possible.
- On Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV devices: several speed test apps are available in their app stores, and some devices show network information in their settings.
- On Smart TVs: some TVs include a network test in their settings, and many have a web browser that can open a speed test site.
- If the TV cannot run a test: hold a phone or laptop right next to the TV, at the same height, connected to the same Wi-Fi network and band.
Testing beside the router measures your broadband. Testing at the TV measures what your TV actually gets.
Step 2: Test at the right time
Run tests:
- At a quiet time, such as mid-morning.
- At the time you usually watch, typically in the evening.
- During the problem, if buffering happens at specific times.

Step 3: Get a wired baseline
If possible, test a laptop or computer connected by Ethernet directly to the router at the same times.
- Wired is good, TV is poor: the problem is your home Wi-Fi.
- Both are poor at the same time: the problem is your broadband or beyond.

Step 4: Make the test fair
- Pause other heavy activity — downloads, backups, game updates and other streams — unless you specifically want to test under normal household load.
- Close apps on the testing device.
- Run each test three times and note the typical result, not the best one.
- Use the same test service each time so results are comparable.
Step 5: Record your results
A simple log turns vague impressions into clear evidence:

A few days of entries show patterns quickly, and they are exactly what a broadband provider needs if you report evening slowdowns.
Step 6: Read the results against IPTV needs
Compare your at-the-TV, busy-time download speed with what your streams need:
- around 10 Mbps for each Full HD stream;
- around 25 Mbps for each 4K stream;
- plus everything else your household does at the same time.

Then look beyond download speed:
- Jitter consistently high — expect stutter on live TV even with good download speeds.
- Any regular packet loss — expect freezes and blocky pictures.
- Ping swinging widely — the connection is unstable, often due to Wi-Fi interference or congestion.
Checking your Wi-Fi link directly
Many devices show a link speed or signal strength in their network settings. This is the speed of the connection between the device and the router, not your internet speed. A low link speed or weak signal at the TV confirms a Wi-Fi coverage problem, even if the broadband itself is fast.
Common testing mistakes
- Testing on a phone beside the router. It hides Wi-Fi problems at the TV.
- Testing only in the morning. It hides evening congestion.
- Looking only at download speed. It hides jitter and packet loss.
- Trusting one test. Results vary; take several.
- Confusing Mbps and MB/s. Divide Mbps by eight to get megabytes per second.
